Tablet productivity increase

Note taking

For taking notes I have trialled SuperNote and EverNote. I decided to stick with Evernote for a number of reasons:

  • Very easy to use
  • After taking notes they are automatically saved in my EverNote account, thus available instantly on the laptop

At the beginning I had some problems with typing, but after practicing it became a lot better. Now, it is not the same as on the laptop, but it is not a big difference either.

Use of Electronic Handout

I have stopped taking the paper handout whenever the electronic copy was available on the VLE. An electronic version of the handout has several advantages:

  • It is coloured; for some charts, this is important.
  • I can zoom in; this again can prove to be very useful, especially in Debates and Controversies
  • I can carry all of them with me whenever I need to.

Using the tablet for assignments

I used the tablet a lot for Debates and Controversies 400 word assignments. I read the relevant articles from the tablet. I did not actually write it on the tablet, but the article was always opened for further clarifications whilst writing it.

I also used it for other assignments, mainly for research. I haven’t tried yet to write an assignment on the tablet, but I will for the next one and see how it goes.

Using the tablet for studying

This is an area in which the tablet has proved to be very useful for me. For example last weekend I went on a trip to London. I used the time spent on the train to study the handouts, notes and articles. Of course, I could have taken the paper version of all those with me, but with the tablet it was a lot easier and more practical.

I also used the tablet to study for Strategic Management Test. To be more specific, I created a mind map with Mindjet, and took a look on it whenever I had a few free minutes. The result was better than expected.

Other uses

I use the tablet every single day for reading the news and articles of interest with Google Reader and checking my e-mails. I also transferred my Timetable on Google Calendar using the ICAL version of it. I use it quite a lot for games (Angry Birds, Where`s my water, Chess) and Facebook.

Some downsides for Motorola Xoom:

  • Quite slow. Even when viewing a small PDF
  • Quite often ( a few times a day)  the app simply closes out of the sudden
  • Sometimes it has the decency to explain: “The application stopped responding”. It does not happen with certain apps. It can happen to any app.
